The Sheep and the Robbers

Fan through the cards, tossing out ? face up ? two jacks, five spot cards and a king.
?These two jacks are robbers,? you explain. ?They came to a farmhouse one evening.??. Tap the deck, indicating that this is the farmhouse?.?and asked the farmer if they could stay there overnight? Point to the king, saying: ?This is the farmer. He said, ?I have two empty barns??? Pull out your side trouser pockets, showing that they are empty. ?? ?and you can each sleep in one of them. But I have five sheep in the barnyard, and I don?t want you stealing them??.
Gesture towards the face-up spot cards. Pick them up and hold them in your left hand in a face-down pile. Deal them into a face-down row from left to right.
?So the farmer went to into the house and went to bed.? Place the king face-down on the top of the deck. ?And each of the robbers went into a barn.? Take the jacks, one in each hand, and place them face inward into your side trouser pockets.
?But robbers will be robbers. So they soon stole the sheep one by one.?
With the right hand, take the spot card on the right and put it into your right pocket under the jack ? that is, closer to your body. With your left hand, take the spot card on the left and put it into your left pocket the same way. With your right hand, take the spot card now on the right and place it into the pocket under the others. Go on, until you have in your right pocket 4 cards, jack on top; in the left pocket 3 cards, jack on top.
?The farmer woke up in the middle of the night and wondered if his sheep were safe.? Turn the king over on top of the deck. ?He turned on a light and headed for the door. The minute the robbers saw the light, they knew they had better put the sheep back. So they returned them one by one.?
Now take 5 cards from your pockets like this:
(1) Take the jack from your left pocket and place it face down to your left.
(2) Take the jack from your right pocket and place it face down to the right of the 1st. jack.
(3) Alternately take 3 spot cards from left and right pockets, placing them in turn face down to the right of the others.
Pick up the king saying: ?The farmer saw that everything was as it should be, so he returned to the house.? Place the king face down on top of the deck. ?But the robbers were not satisfied with their close call. They wanted those sheep. So what did they do? Pause for a response? ?Lucky guess. That?s right, they stole the sheep again.? Laid out on the table from left to right are 2 jacks and 3 spot cards. Alternately place the cards in your pockets, starting with the card at the right with your right hand. You now have 5 spot cards in your right pocket and the 2 jacks in your left pocket.
?But the farmer sensed that something funny was going on.?
Take the king from the top of the deck and drop it face up on the table.
?He got out of bed without turning on the light. Then he grabbed his shotgun, went into the barnyard, and discovered that his sheep were missing. The robbers were in big trouble. Only one thing could save them ? if the sheep were in one barn??
Take the 5 spot cards from your right pocket and spread them face up on the table.
??and the robbers were in the other?. Take the 2 jacks from your left pocket and drop them face up on the table. ?And of course, there was nothing else in the barns? Pull out your pockets, showing that they?re empty.
